The same kinds and amount of mulching materials should be applied over garden perennials to give them the protection they need for winter survival. It is best not to apply mulch until after the surface inch or so of the ground is frozen because it then serves the important purpose of stabilizing soil temperatures, preventing rapid and sharp fluctuations that would cause “heaving” of plants and exposure to lethal temperatures.

Tidying Up

Another late garden activity that comes some time in November, if not earlier or later depending upon location and the weather, is the annual pre-winter clean up. This is important in connection with the controlling of insects and diseases as well as from the standpoint of good appearance.

Dead tops of perennials should be removed after they have been blackened by killing frosts. Annuals should be dug up and removed from the garden scene, root and all, because the larvae and eggs of most of the common garden insects winter over on the dead tops of plants.

Their removal and destruction will go a long way in reducing the annual threat from this source. Diseases, too, over-winter as spores on plant remains making it doubly important to remove all dead tops of plants.

Home growers of raspberries will find it worthwhile to lay the canes down and cover them with soil before the ground freezes. Just covering the tips, which is the method of winter protection usually provided by commercial growers, will be sufficient where a snow cover can be expected.

Strawberries must be “hardened” before covering them with a two-inch layer of marsh hay or straw. Plants like red emerald philodendron should be exposed to freezing temperatures before being covered but they should not be exposed to temperatures below 20 degrees.

Obviously, everything cannot be mentioned in this column, but one more comment is so important that it should be made: “Don’t burn tree leaves.” Save them for mulches under evergreens, trees and shrubs or for the garden, and put the surplus in a compost pile.

In order to plaster a wall all you need are the right tools, material and the instructions. It is actually quite a simple task and before you know, the holes in your plaster will be gone. Normally a three-coat application of plaster is necessary to rebuild a wall. There is a certain finesse when applying the plaster. It should support the surface and bear its weight load without cracking. The surface should then become smooth and hard and the finished surface should then be suitable for papering or painting.

At first two coarse or rough coats are applied to start with the three-coat plaster system. These coats are a mixture of lime or gypsum, aggregate, fiber and water and they make up the base of the wall. The most common aggregate used in rough-coat plaster is sand. Lime comes from limestone or ground oyster shells. Gypsum is often replaced for lime, because it has a much faster drying time.

The first coat is known as the scratch coat because it is scratched with a comb to make the surface rough. The brown coat is the second coat and is applied just directly to the scratch coat. The sand lends the rough texture to the coat.

The final coat is the traditional lime finish coat, which is a fine mix concocted by the plasterer. The lime putty is prepared. On the mixing board the plasterer creates a circle of putty, banked up like a swimming pool. The plasterer pours water into the circle and sprinkles the water with plaster.

The plasterer waits till the lime and plaster mix transforms itself. When the slaked lime stops giving off heat, the mix is ready to be mixed with the putty. And this lime putty is the last coat of plaster. It gives the wall a hard and shiny finish coat. Some plasterers have a spray bottle and keep the plaster wet as they work to smoothen it to give it the finishing touches.

Plastering a wall depends not only on the lime putty that is applied on it but also the surface on which it is applied. The degree of adhesion and the quality of the plaster job depends a lot on it. Hence the brick surface needs to be treated before the plastering of the wall is started. And so each job of plastering a wall is unique. Basically there are two main types of plasters – the cement based plaster and the gypsum based one. For outdoor work the cement based plaster is used. For indoors the gypsum based plasters are used. It is used outside it could be attacked by the damp and the wall may crumble.

Let us look at the common gypsum plasters. They are browning, bonding and metal lathing plasters. The modern ready-made plaster is already mixed with perlite, vermiculite and several other additives. They help to make the wall fire-resistant and improve insulation.

Only good clean water needs to be added to the plaster before using it. When a wall is plastered and it has a differing absorption, the best thing is to use a bonding sealer to key the surfaces to be plastered. This ensures a smooth and clean finish to the plastered wall.

Should we decide to embark on a huge construction project or we are simply doing a small construction project, one of the essential elements that we have to decide on are construction services.

Should we decide to embark on a huge construction project or we are simply doing a small construction project, one of the essential elements that we have to decide on are construction services.

Often, when we are not yet experienced with the whole building process, we could find ourselves hiring several various teams to take care of specific stages in our construction project.

But with the right construction services, we can eliminate several of these other teams and have one company working on all the important construction work necessary in order to start and finish the project.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT CONSTRUCTION SERVICES

For major constructions, we may need to hold a bidding to award the project to the top bidder. The best bidder will naturally be one with the most reasonable costs but still have the experience to build our structures accordingly and efficiently.

While in the past, various services for specific areas and the major building construction services may come in separate entities; nowadays, construction services can offer most everything that we need. This dramatically lowers the costs on laborers and suppliers.

A good construction services provider should be able to work on all major aspects of construction from on-site jobs to painting; electrical work to other construction that we could require in the process.

As construction could be a bit pricey; a few construction services can also offer financing alternatives to soften the blow of building construction costs.

However these building construction services should not merely focus on the project itself but on a few other elements as well. This includes safety of the laborers; following building guidelines; and other regulations as dictated by certain authorities covering the location of our building construction project.

CHOOSING CONSTRUCTION SERVICES

If we are not familiar with construction companies, we could find ourselves fumbling in the dark as reliable and efficient construction services may be hard to find; especially depending on our site area.

We can ask referrals from people who have worked with construction services before or we can browse the internet and do a little research ourselves.

With the convenience of the internet, we can find the appropriate building construction services that can work on the kind of construction project that we want completed.

Mr. Robert Devalt is interested in different types of paving and talks about construction services and many other things on his homepage. If you want to know more about paving, you must give Robert a minute or two.

The benefits of adding a garden shed to your backyard might surprise you. The convenience alone is a great benefit. You no longer have to lug your gardening equipment back to the basement. Garden sheds can be as simple as you wish. It is entirely possible to build a good quality and durable shed for less than $500.00. On the other hand garden sheds can be quite substantial. The choice is yours.

Having a garden shed to store unused belongings, supplies or equipment has a number of purposes. The first purpose is that it hides away clutter. Belongings that are not is use can be returned to the shed and out of sight. The second purpose is to secure your belongings. Your rakes, trowels, clippers and so on can be securely stored in your shed and are less likely to be taken from your property. For added security you can add a lock to your shed.

Another purpose served by a garden shed is to protect your belongings from the elements. When properly stored in the shed, your equipment is no longer exposed to the sun and rain. If you allow your garden equipment to be exposed to the elements you will decrease the life span of the belongings. Over time metal tools will rust and wooden handles will rot.

There are a number of methods by which you can add a garden shed to your backyard. The first option would be to build the shed yourself from scratch. You would be able to find dozens of garden shed plans on the internet or at your local home renovation store. Another option would be to buy a garden shed kit. Again, you can find shed kit distributors online or you can purchase a kit from a local home reno store. The last and easiest method is to purchase a pre-fabricated garden shed and have it delivered to your home.

Pre-fabricated garden sheds can be constructed from wood, metal, resin or a combination of materials. Garden shed kits tend to be made from wood or some type of metal like aluminum. In the event you are going to build the shed yourself, you will likely choose to have a wooden shed.

Installing a pre-built small garden shed will be just a matter of preparing the site base and calling to arrange for delivery. If you are going to built your shed yourself, you will probably require anywhere from 1-4 days, depending on the size of shed, and your construction experience. Ordering a kit will allow you to build even quicker, as everything has been planned out for you, and all the material are included. Whichever you choose, you are sure to end up with a garden shed that will be useful and attractive for years to come.

Visit this great site about small garden sheds to read more about how to build small garden sheds.

Construction jobs or even commercial and agricultural tasks require several machines and equipments. One of the most commonly used one is what we call the skid steer equipment. Skid steers, skid loader, skid to steer loader; “bobcat” is a rigid frame, engine-powered machine with lift arms where you attached several accessory tools. This machine can address limitations including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, walking, reaching and bending.

The bucket of this machine can be replaced with an almost endless list of attachments. Most bobcat attachments have specific purposes such as post hole digger, walk-way sweeper, stump grinders or ditch diggers. These attachments mostly have a hydraulic capability to operate while the older skid steer may not.

Size really does matter, especially when one is trying to work with such a limited space. The skid steer equipment is known for its compact size aside from its flexibility. Moreover, the machine being light, it can easily be towed at the back of a larger truck for transport.

One of the unique features of this machine is its wheel and track operation. It is a four-wheeled drive with double acting cylinders, which allows the left wheels and right wheels to move and operate independently of each other. This feature enables the vehicle to do zero radius turn, an ability to turn skid steer tracks on a dime while standing perfectly still.

This unique machine was invented for cleaning up turkey manure. Tractor loaders at that time were too big and heavy to operate. It was on 1957 when the first prototype was created by the Keller Manufacturing, surpassing the expectations of its creator. It was a three-wheeled, light and compact machine. It has a rear caster wheel that can turn around within its own length and can perform the task as a traditional front-end loader.

It was on 1957 when Melroe Manufacturing Company acquired all the rights to manufacture the machine. The loader was furthered researched and developed. Three years later, the first four-wheeled drive was introduced. Later, the license was given out to other manufacturing companies and has undergone numerous improvements including tracks that were later replaced by wheels. There are now several versions of a skid loader which often referred to as a “Skidsteer in the Construction Industry”. These include Bobcat, John Deere, Gehl, JCB, Mustang, New Holland and CaseIH.

Becoming popular nowadays is the mini version of these loaders, the mini skid steers. Although much smaller in size, there’s nothing small in terms of their productivity and function. This mini version is perfect for landscaping, utility installation, fencing and moving materials around the work site or at home. They still share the same flexibility of the conventional skid steer equipment. Because of the size, they do not have seats inside the machine. Instead, the operator stands at the back of the machine to maneuver it unlike a normal size case skid steer.

Obviously, there are a lot of advantages and benefits that you can acquire from this machine. It is basically a hundred tools in 1, powerful equipment in a small rigid frame of machine. It can replace several crews thus minimizing the labor force, hence minimizing money and resources. And because it’s a machine, it sure saves a lot of time completing tasks.

If you are looking at some carpet cleaning done before the holiday season kicks in, and if you live somewhere in Illinois, probably the Naperville Carpet Cleaning company could help you out. In fact, you might just about get the best carpet cleaning if you use their services which are backed with an eight year experience in the line. A lot of people who are in the carpet cleaning business are doing it as a hobby, but these guys mean serious business. They have eight years of experience, which lucidly reflects on the kind of expertise they have gained in the profession. You should know that cleaning rugs and carpets is, after all, a difficult job that needs a lot of care.

Sometimes, it takes a lot of specialization and effort, especially when you need to take out obstinate stains without spoiling the fabric or the color of the carpet. That is when it is best to hire an expert to handle the task.

Naperville Carpet Cleaning provides its services for all kinds of carpets, whether they are in a residential area or a commercial area. They are quite well-known for being able to clean area rugs quite well. They have also built quite a name for themselves in the cleaning and maintenance of tiles and grouts. Along with carpets, they also provide cleaning services or the other upholsteries around your home, for a package rate. The best part of having such a contract deal is that you don’t have to deal with two different companies for your housecleaning needs, at least for the upholstery. These people will sign a contract with you to handle the cleaning of your floor coverings as well as your wall and other draperies.

The company is known for their intricate stepwise approach toward their carpet cleaning job. They begin with a preliminary survey of the area to arrive at a decision on what kind of procedure must be employed. The next step is to set up the area by moving the furniture and other stuff from the place. A preliminary spraying process begins the treatment. This is followed by vigorously agitating the carpet so that a lot of the particulate matter on it is loosened and removed. A rinsing treatment is done next, which is done with very pure water. There is a follow-up spot treatment done in order to remove spots that still remain. They then spend time in grooming the fibers of the carpet so that they are aligned in the same position as they were before. An inspection is conducted after all the treatments to check if anything is overlooked.

You must also know that they have a referral program in which you can recommend them to other clients and earn some money. You get 10% of the client’s bill as your referral. So, with Naperville Carpet Cleaning, it isn’t just a thorough carpet cleaning you get; you may also stand to earn a little!

Since modern outdoor heating systems came on the market, they have been selling like hot cakes. An outdoor heater will enable you to spend more time outdoors. Instead of you all sitting around your indoor fire place, you can relax on your patio, even on very chilly days and evenings.

To heat outdoor areas you can purchase a backyard pit fire (which you can even use for barbecues), a chiminea, or a large variety of patio heaters. Outdoor heaters are so popular that furniture designers are producing fashionable patio tables and chairs to complement the ambiance created by the outdoor heater. There are three types of outdoor heaters – free standing, permanent, or table-top.

The free standing type and the table-top type are portable. This makes them easy to move to different places outdoors. As its name suggests, the permanent heater becomes a fixture on your patio. Permanent heaters are the most effective because they are able to produce more warmth.

Another benefit of a heater that is permanently installed is you don’t have to keep filling the gas tank. With its fixed gas line, your permanent heater will carry on functioning as long as you want. You won’t be able to move the heater around, and the installation will cost you some money, but these are minor drawbacks.

A gas charcoal fireplace is hassle free and it looks great. These fireplaces even have glowing embers that look exactly like burning charcoal so they create a cozy atmosphere. And they are safe, especially when children are around.

Table-top outdoor heaters are really good sellers. These heaters run off propane or natural gas. They are easy to use and have a safety mechanism that turns the heater off in case it falls over or is bumped. And of course they can be easily moved around.

If you want a heater that not only provides lots of warmth, but one that also looks good, then you’ll like the infrared patio heater. Finished in either brushed steel or copper, these gas operated heaters give off strong infrared heat that will really warm up your patio, even when the weather is very cold. This type of heater is often used in restaurants.

If you’re not keen on the smell of gas that is emitted from gas heaters, then an electric outdoor heater is the answer. The unit looks similar to an air conditioner, and it is usually installed on one of your patio’s walls under the ceiling Because of this, an electric heater will not take up space on your patio, and it will be out of reach of children.

The really great thing about electric heaters is that they produce instant heat. The moment you turn it on, you will instantly feel heat. You certainly don’t want your guests shivering and shaking on your patio while you’re waiting for that old heater to get into gear.

So now you’ve got a good idea of what’s out there regarding outdoor heating. Your choices are numerous. No more winter blues for you – you can enjoy your patio throughout the year! All you need is a good modern outdoor heater.

When Toasty Joe is not answering your calls or emails he can be found enjoying the Carolina winter evenings outside soaking up the heat from his very own outdoor fire pit. You can enjoy an outdoor fire pit too, just get one at ToasyJoes.com

The households that are located in rain-prone regions need to pay an extra attention towards the maintenance of their roofs. One element that can serve the required purpose is a roof flashing. It is a sheet or sheathing that covers the valleys and voids of the roof.

The essence of flashing gets enhanced when your home is located in rain-prone region. Constant rainfalls take a toll on the structure of your roof. The homeowners residing in such places need to inculcate the flashing feature to make the things work.

Take the measurement tape and note down the measurements of the roof spread on which the flashing would be applied. Once you’ve apprehended the need of the flashing material, visit a local hardware store and purchase the supplies. Bring home the required flashing material and cut out pieces of flashing from the board. Use a utility knife or tin snips to achieve the required purpose.

Lay the flashing fragment flat on the roof such that the flashing covers the valley well. The voids as well the junctures of the roof must be enveloped by the flashing. The junctures would include the joining ends of two ridges or sides of the roof.

Once you’ve laid the flashing flat on the roof, staple it to the underlying setup such that a margin of about 2 inches is left on each side of the flashing. Don’t nail the setup as that could hurt the material of the flashing to large extent. The setup would render a water-proof setting to your roof. An additional fascia board layer can be accommodated in the scheme of things to cover those voids that were left unattended during the flashing.

To add an extra protection to the entire setup, use tar and spread it over the surface. Sometimes the voids and the valleys are left unattended after the application of flashing layer. The tar layer covers that aspect as well and ensures a stringent setting to the setup.

Take the shingles to the roof and nail down the fixture with the help of a hand-held hammer. The shingles need to be installed over the tar layer as they rigidify the structure and provides final touch to the framework. If some shingles are installed with a faulty setting then a pry bar tool can be used to remove the concerned shingle completely.

Whenever it rains the next time, observe the interior walls and ceilings to locate water molds and leaks. No such issues confirm the success of the flashing.

Some say you can, some say you can’t. All I know is that we do grow orchids in our living-room. Quietly defying all the people who said we could never grow them at home, we brought some budding plants back with us from Guatemala after getting permission from the proper authorities.

To the amazement of our skeptical friends and even our own, they began to thrive and flower. Gradually we slipped deeper and deeper into a world of pseudobulbs and back bulbs, osmunda fiber, fir bark and sphagnum and always more and more orchids.

What we’re doing anyone who wants to can do. Although many protest that orchid growing in the average home is not possible, presently I will tell you how we did it.

But first, why grow orchids? What is the charm of this plant? Why is it considered exciting to raise?

One of our first discoveries was that orchid flowers last a long time. One year a Cypripedium lasted six weeks.

Then we found that orchids come in every color, shape and size from huge cattleyas to tiny spray orchids with exquisite markings on the petals of some and designs in the hearts of others. What a range to choose from !

Furthermore, most orchids are fragrant. When bought from a florist, their perfume is often lost but the scent of the home grown kinds is another reason why there is joy in growing them.

So much for the “why,” now for the “how to.”

After asking questions, experimenting and reading a book or two, this is what we tliscovered about growing orchids indoors, and this is a pleasure to share.

Good ventilation and fresh air, orchids must have. For ample light, they should be grown in a southern, eastern or western window where direct sunlight is allowed to hit them only from mid-October to mid-February.

Most important of all is humidity. It is possible to grow some orchids loose in the house in trays full of water and pebbles. Certain sorts will thrive this way if they’re top-sprayed several times a day.

A more successful way is to enclose them in some sort of glass case. One orchid plant will flourish under a bell jar like phalaenopsis orchid. A few will settle happily in an aquarium with a glass top. But, any kind of glass case will do. One may be made of an old-fashioned book case or dish cupboard with glass doors. Substitute glass for the wooden back, set it in a window and there is a perfect orchidarium.

In making an orchidarium, provisions should be made for glass on all sides, adjustable vents top and bottom and a tray, to fit inside the case, with pebbles and water in it. These provisions result in plenty of light, circulation of warm air from room and humidity.
