Picking the perfect containers for your container garden

One of the most enjoyable aspects of starting your own container garden is choosing the container. There are so many choices that it can be a little overwhelming. To help you with this most enjoyable part of the project I would like to give you a few ideas. First you will want to consider the surroundings for your container garden. If you want a natural outdoor blend, an earth tone container would be a great choice. These can be made from many natural or faux natural materials and can be found at any home and garden center. Maybe a beautiful wood or natural clay container would enhance a natural look.

Or you may want a lively colorful look to your container garden, something that says wow look at me!. The possibilities for this are endless. You could choose a variety of colored containers and make it a rainbow garden, this would certainly give your garden an eye catching appeal. Or you could choose a theme, such as southwestern or Moroccan to make it fun and colorful.

If you desire a more uniformed or formal look to your container garden you could choose your pots all in the same color with maybe different shapes. Or you may want to use the same containers for each garden, so the look is very symmetrical.

One idea that will bring a very personal touch to your garden is to create your own. You can purchase plain clay pots and do mosaic designs by attaching small tiles or broken china. Add some grout and as easy as that you have your own unique personalized containers. Even painting the containers and adding floral or abstract designs will make it your very own. Personally I enjoy these containers, your imagination will go wild!

Whatever you choose to fit your own personal style, I’m sure that you will find the search for your perfect garden containers most enjoyable. Just by visiting a few garden centers or floral shops you will be astounded by the possibilities. In fact your imagination will take off and the excitement of starting your own container garden will make you want to get going right away.

Hopefully I have given you some ideas on how to choose your own unique containers. Beware, once you get started you will surely come home with more containers and end up with a larger garden than you had originally planned on! Container gardening can become quite addictive!

Using Accessories In Your Landscaping Project

There are many things that you can use to tie together your garden design scheme. Whether natural or man-made they can help you enhance the attractiveness of your new backyard.

Useful Items For Designing Your Outdoor Space

If you look around well-landscaped garden designs you will notice that they make use of various items to enhance natural features and create focal points. Whether they double up by offering additional use options, such as garden furniture, there is plenty of choice available and it would be easy to overdo it!

Whether large or small, the landscape accessories you pick for your garden should always tie in with the design scheme that you are going for, so they do not look out of place. Larger items and elements, like for instance fences, should ideally be planned in the initial design stages while smaller pieces can usually be added on at a later date without trouble.

As well as choosing items that work in harmony with the rest of your scheme you should always make sure that you like them for themselves! This seems obvious but you should like the way an accessory look and feel in itself rather than chose an interesting option that fits with the décor but that you do not think aesthetically pleasing.

Natural items, such as made from wood, driftwood or stone, are usually rather easy to integrate in your existing garden scheme as by their very nature they will blend in more seamlessly. They come in many colors and can help create interest in your backyard as well as making the space even more pleasant and attractive.

Many garden accessories available on the market are man-made. For instance items such as decorative glass and sculptures, candlestick holders and various ornamental lighting elements can help you create an interesting and beautiful space. The resulting effect could actually look quite natural if the items are chosen carefully for how well they fit in with the rest of your scheme.

To ally use and aesthetics, you can turn to a vast selection of accessories: though some may not strictly speaking be actual ‘landscaping items’ like fences or patio surfaces they can play a significant part in enhancing the look of your backyard. Items such as pieces of outdoor furniture, pots for your plants and bird feeding devices all fit into this dual purpose idea. As such it is worth noting that they need to be useful, well integrated in your scheme and pleasing to the eye to fulfill their role as landscape accessories.

There are indeed many things to keep in mind when putting the finishing touches to an outdoor design. The key thing is not to cross the fine line between accessorizing and cluttering! Sometimes less is more and picking suitable accessories in the right quantities to complement the scheme will result in a more enjoyable backyard.

Bring Your Garden To Life With A Spring Makeover

Many people see spring as the beginning of the gardening year, and it’s the perfect time for a garden makeover. Any improvements you make now will get the new season off to a great start.

Here are a few ideas that can give a tired garden a quick facelift:

De-clutter: Resolve to get rid of anything you no longer want or need, but think green and recycle as much as possible. You might be able to sell or give away play equipment that your children have outgrown, building materials left over from DIY projects, even that wheelbarrow with a wonky wheel … Your junk could be someone else’s treasure and just think of the extra space you’ll have!

Make a new lawn: Most lawns can withstand a lotof wear and tear but eventually the damage takes its toll. If your ‘lawn’ has become a rutted patch of weeds replace it with fresh, top quality turf for an instant green carpet.

Coordinate your containers: Most keen gardeners have a collection of assorted plant containers that they have acquired over the years. Pots, tubs, boxes and troughs in a variety of different shapes, sizes, colours, styles and materials can all be useful, but when clustered together on the patio they might not give the overall effect you were hoping for. There is a place for a pink plastic flowerpot in the garden, but it probably isn’t next to an antique stone urn. If you don’t want to buy a complete set of new containers try rearranging the ones you already have into groups that do look good together. You can paint wooden planters in the same or toning colours, and instead of trying to hide a single ‘odd’ pot you could make a feature of it.

Be ruthless: Unfortunately, plants don’t last forever. If some of yours are past their prime they might not be worth cosseting for another year. Try taking cuttings from a favourite plant so you can replace it with a vigorous new offspring. Otherwise, get rid of mediocre plants that are taking up valuable space and treat yourself to something different that you’ll really be proud of.

Add a focal point: If the first word that springs to mind when looking at part of your garden is ‘boring’ give it some interest in the shape of a statue, sundial or water feature.

When you start improving your garden one idea will often lead to another, but tackling all those jobs is a different matter. If you need advice and help with some of the bigger projects, ask for a free, no obligation consultation from a professional landscape gardener who can turn those ideas into reality.

There’s no question that when it comes to landscaping in Australia, using native plants is always the best idea. If you’re trying to come up with a great native plant to accentuate your existing landscape design, the grass tree might be just the thing you are looking for.

The Advantages Of Grass Trees

There’s no question that when it comes to landscaping in Australia, using native plants is always the best idea. If you’re trying to come up with a great native plant to accentuate your existing landscape design, the grass tree might be just the thing you are looking for.

Facts About Grass Trees -

Grass trees are fascinating plants, and are native to Australia. They live an average of 600 years, so longevity is certainly not a concern. Their rate of growth is very slow – they only grow an average of 1 metre every 100 years. Overgrowth is not a concern, another feature that makes them popular with landscape gardeners Brisbane. As a result, most people simply prefer to re-establish existing grass trees in their gardens or within their outdoor areas.

Tips For Growing And Maintaining -

If you’ve been thinking about adding a couple of these palnts to your existing landscape design scheme, you should know that they work best as accents. In other words, they should be used to accentuate the existing layout of your home’s landscaping. As expensive as they are, it is impractical to plant large numbers of them, anyway. Generally, people tend to plant only one or two of these trees around the garden allowing them to draw attention alternatively to serve as a beautiful backdrop to the reminder of their garden’s features.

Planting and maintaining a grass tree isn’t terribly difficult. Some key points to keep in mind include:

=> Grass trees require very little water and don’t require a great deal of maintenance. Once established, they do pretty well on their own.

=> Optimally, you should plant or re-establish these trees in a sunny area. For these plants to thrive, at a minimum partially sunny area is required.

=> As for soil, you’re going to want to place your grass tree in well-drained soil. The top of the tree’s root ball should be just beneath the surface of the soil so that it can act as a natural well.

=> During the dry season, from October to May, water once or twice per week. Take care to ensure that the root ball and the other roots get soaking wet every time you water the plant.

=> In the spring during the first couple of years of owning a grass tree, cut off any flower stalks that may appear. They can stress the tree and make it harder for the plant to thrive properly.

The ongoing maintenance is minimal once the grass tree has successfully established. These plants make a great addition to absolutely any landscaping.

Grass trees are immensely popular among landscape gardeners Brisbane such as MP Landscapes for their aesthetic appeal as well as their easy maintenance. Many landscaping Brisbane companies will tell you that the grass tree can make an exceptional addition to virtually any kind of landscape design plan.

What would you think of two gardens with dissimilar appearances besides the fact that they sprout different kinds of plants? The “look” would be the most obvious answer. Good-looking gardens often contain flourishing flowers of different colors. With herbs, people tend to think that imitation of this kind of design isn’t possible. The truth is, you actually can do it. There are certain herbs that grow attractive flowers, and all you have to do is know which herbs they are so you can place them in such a way that they beautify your garden. By doing that, you’ll have a beautiful garden without sacrificing usefulness.

Designing an herb garden requires you to go beyond how it’s going to look like. First off, you’ll have herbs – so you’ll be using these herbs. If you want a garden just to make your backyard look great for visitors, then perhaps you’d be better off with other kinds of plants. If your sights are set on an herb garden, however, you will have to go back to the following basics.

Seeds: Knowledge of which herbs grow in your area would be good so as to not render your seedlings useless. There are some herbs that will not survive colder or warmer climates, and you have to know which ones do not thrive where you are. Soil is another problem – if your soil is not good for herb growth, you’ll fail. Research different kinds of herbs to know which herbs can grow in your location. Better yet, go to a nearby shop and purchase your seeds, rather than purchasing them online.

Sunlight: Plants need an adequate amount of sun – this includes herbs. Herbs don’t grow that tall, so you have to consider where you’ll place them. They will need to be placed in an area where they can get a reasonable amount of sunlight without being overshadowed by taller trees or plants. Don’t give them too much sun either or they’ll just wither away and die. Herbs need to be put under the sun for a time, and then placed back into the shade. This is where indoor herb gardens really make it easy. Herbs can be placed in the windowsill for them to absorb sunlight, then removed from sunshine after a little while.

Space: Herbs tend to grow strong roots. You will have to take root space into consideration since you can’t resist planting another herb after your first successful herb. With multiple herbs, space them evenly to avoid competition for sunlight and soil.

Before thinking of your herb garden designs, there are a lot of things that you’ll need to consider. These things won’t really require you to be intelligent – just diligent.

Gardening with children can be so fulfilling, for you and for them. Whether you are a teacher, a friend or a parent, you can enjoy some real quality time with the children that you care for. There are a few ways to make it fun for them. Remember to have fun, encourage silliness and be open to the children’s ideas. Kids really enjoy getting outside with adults and creating something. Try to include things in the garden that the kids will really enjoy. Have them set up hummingbird feeders, spinning wind catchers, wind chimes, and make vegetable markers or signs. The more colorful and personal they make it, the more they will love it. Using hummingbird feeders, spinners and chimes will help give the kids some instant gratification. It’s a lot more interesting than simply putting a seed in the dirt and walking away! Set up a craft table in advance and let the kids decorate and design whatever they can think of to stick in the garden. They can use construction paper, index cards, glue, glitter, beads and even seeds to decorate signs. Use some laminating paper or dip in melted paraffin wax to waterproof signs. Sprouting seeds indoors is fun for kids and lets them see how roots grow towards the water and how leaves open up towards the sun. Simply placing seeds on a wet paper towel and putting them into a sandwich bag will make them sprout rather quickly. Then they can be placed in the dirt and have a better chance of survival than if you had only placed the seeds in the soil. Kids love the idea of introducing beneficial insects, butterflies, frogs and lizards into the garden. Do a little research about your area and find out which insects are beneficial. Your local nursery can usually provide you with useful information on which insects to introduce and where to get them. Using living creatures to protect the vegetables from invaders is not only fun, but beneficial. Teaching children how to garden organically will not only help them to ingest and absorb less chemicals now, but as they grow and plant their own gardens in the future. Organic gardening is more fun, safer and better for their health. The fun isn’t over when the garden is planted. Kids love to catch bugs and worms and then introduce them into the garden. They can learn about recycling and composting while adding beneficial compost to their garden soil. It will get richer by the year if you avoid chemical fertilizers. Let them water with interesting containers or spray nozzles for the water hose. Get an automatic <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”http://www.roboreel.com”title=”Hose Reel”>hose reel</a> and let them do it all by themselves. One with forward assist and automatic hose retrieval makes it easy for even very young children to feel important and participate in the family fun. Happy gardening!

How to Get a Vegetable Garden Design

Opening a home vegetable garden is not as easy as picking up your tools, digging and planting some seeds. If you desire to have a good harvest at the end of the season, it’s imperative to do some cautious planning before really growing your vegetables. A fundamental factor in your planning should be your vegetable garden design.

Your vegetable garden design should comprise garden location, plant selection and a planting plan.

First of all, for your garden location, find the sunniest and brightest spot in the whole yard. Try to avoid areas that are under the shade, as most vegetables need at least 5 hours of direct sunlight a day.

Following this is the preparation of the soil. Be sure to add generous amounts of organic humus to your soil. Compost, peat moss, well rotted manure or processed manure is all good forms of organic humus.

Plant selection is the second part. In selecting the vegetables, you should consider space limitations, climate and other factors that may inhibit the growth of the vegetables you want to include in your garden. Also, consider the individual needs of the vegetables.

The final tread in vegetable garden design is the planting plan. This step requires you to make a diagram containing the kinds of vegetables to be planted, the distance between plots and the time of planting. You can also put in the dates to remind you of the necessary tasks.

Appropriate planning in your vegetable garden design helps to ensure a better harvest every time.
