All You Need To Know About Flower Bulbs

Bulbs are easy methods of planting a garden without doing a whole mess of work. Bulbs, while easy to plant and grow, still require an attention to detail in order to grow correctly. The learning process won’t take long, so you can have you garden up and going in no time at all.
Your flowers that grow from bulbs will bloom according to what condition the bulb is in when planted. The bulb should be large in size, if possible. A large bulb would indicate that the flower has a larger chance of blooming once the time comes. Small bulbs may indicate a problem in development, although this is not always the case when working with flower bulbs.
It seems odd, but bulbs can easily be damaged by water. An abundance of exposure to water will essentially drown out the bulb. When you are storing your flower bulbs, you should keep them in a cool, dark, place if you intend on using them soon. You are even able to freeze them if you intend on keeping the bulbs for next season.
When you wish to plant your bulb, ideally you will want to do so when it is the Fall season. Pick a time in which you think it will be around a month and a half before the Winter brings a chilling frost to the ground. That way the bulb will have time to take up home in the ground soil before the Winter winds come to test the strength of the bulb.
Different bulbs will have to be placed at different depths in the soil, depending on their characteristics. Be careful not to dig a shallow hole, as this will leave little protection from the Winter and if the plant survives, it could be seriously maimed. Digging a hole too deep would also secure an unfortunate fate for your plant, as it would essentially bury it alive.
Flower bulbs, like any other plant, will need rich soil to thrive. Soil can sometimes become drained of nutrients, and they can only be replaced through certain growing tactics or by using fertilizer. Using a fertilizer is always a good choice, so long as the fertilizer you pick is not laden with chemicals that would hinder the growth of the flower. Information on compatibility can be found in gardening books and through gardening experts.
Final Thoughts
You can have a lot of fun growing gardens with flower bulbs. They are quite easy to work with, certainly much more so than other gardening methods. At the end of the season you may have a bit more work to do than you did initially, but it’s therapeutic work in itself.
Flowers That Bloom During The Months Of Summer

Climates in which Summer brings great heat can be dangerous to your garden. Some gardens may not make it through the season if you aren’t aware on what to plant and how to care for it. The avid gardener will know such things to keep their gardening habits going throughout the year.
You can give the marigold flowers a try, if you have the schedule to water the flower frequently. Marigolds bring a bright color of orange to your garden, and can seemingly almost be in constant bloom throughout the months of Summer and Fall. Marigolds are typically seen as a great beginner plant, since aside from the watering they require little maintenance.
Sunflowers are another great flower for the warmer months of the year. Sunflowers also, like the marigold, bring a fresh color to your garden. Sunflowers are popular for their unique shape, which makes them great in bouquets and gifts. They also smell great, making them perfect for in-home decorations.
So far we have been reviewing flowers that bright bright hues into your garden. If you were looking for something more soothing, you can invest in a morning glory vine. Morning glory flowers will quickly take root and spread over their current surroundings. You will be surprised to see the vine take the shape of almost anything you would need- so long as you prune the vine carefully and don’t damage it. Morning glory flowers are typically easy to maintain.
There is nothing worse than to have your garden eaten up by pests or destroyed in the process of giving home to insects. Introducing certain types of insects to your garden can help level the playing field. An example would be with the butterfly bush, which was named after its property of attracting butterflies to your garden. You have much power over the creatures in your garden, simply by choosing what plants that you would like to include in your scheme.
Going for the tropical theme? This theme is popular in warm areas, so it wouldn’t be so unheard of. The hibiscus flower would be something you would want to look into if that is indeed the case. The tropical look given by the hibiscus plant is also easily customized, since the flowers can come in several colors to inspire different emotions and feelings. Hibiscus plants will take some extra work to grow correctly, but the effort is worth it in the end.
In Conclusion
A gardener will be able to guide you in your quest to find a garden appropriate for a Summer bloom. Just remember that it can be tough work to start your own garden, and that you may have to go through a trial and error process before you find your success.

The large-flowering chrysanthemums which were set out in March or April and should be 6 or 8 inches high by now may be cut back within 3 or 4 inches of the ground. If you wish to increase your stock root the tips which you removed. In the Middle South most chrysanthemum hobbyists now agree that the period May 20 to June 10 is the best season for putting out cuttings of the large flowered, exhibition type varieties. Freshly-rooted cuttings planted during this period will establish themselves and develop into more vigorous plants sooner than those planted in early spring.
Garden type chrysanthemums should be planted early, but successful planting is possible as late as the end of June. Early planting gives more time for growth and, with several successive pinching, a heavy, bushy plant, which will bloom heavily, develops.
Roses bloom in January along the Gulf Coast, but through the Mid-South there is practically no bloom during the winter months. There may be some bloom in April, but May is the first big rose month of the season. With the exuberance of lush spring growth it is easy to forget that black spot will surely creep in, unless we apply a good fungicide regularly.
Injurious insects are so few that the rose grower should have little trouble controlling them with a good spray. It is black spot that is many growers great rose enemy. I have to fight it constantly. I have found that if I start the treatments early, using a good fungicide each week until hot dry weather arrives, I obtain good control.
Layering, both mound and air”layering, can be done this month. Air-layering is easily handled and is one of the most interesting of all garden practices. Try it on some of your hard to root plants.
Questions of the Month
Question: Please tell me how to keep my poinsettias, growing in pots outdoors, from getting too tall. I would like to have stocky plants that will give several blooms per plant.
Answer: To encourage stocky growth, prune the poinsettias back to within 4 or 5 inches of the top of the pot about the last of June. S
Question: The leaves of my gardenias have turned yellow. They are grown in shade and normally have good color. What is the trouble?
Answer: This condition may be due to an iron deficiency. Try spraying the plants with a solution of l tablespoonful of powdered iron sulfate to a gallon of water, and then watering them with the same solution; about a month later use one of the iron chelates, following the recommendations on the container.
Question: My lawn was a lush green all winter but now seems to be dying out completely.- What has happened?
Answer: Perhaps your lawn is rye-grass, an annual that dies out when the weather gets hot in late spring. It must be replanted every fall.
Question: There are great numbers of cot- tony”looking insects on the stems of my azaleas, principally in the axils of the small branches. What are they, and are they harmful.?
Answer: l believe they are either soft scale or cottony aphids, either of which will kill your plants if not checked. You should kill the aphids on houseplants before they kill your plants. For control use one of the lindane malathion spray preparations. Two or three spraying at two-week intervals may be necessary.
Question: The blooms of some of my hemerocallis are lovely in early morning but look sick and limp by midday. Why is this?
Answer: Some day-lilies do not hold up in full sun. Try moving these clumps to a partially shaded location.
Question: When is the best time to apply a weed killer to destroy honeysuckle and poison oak?
Answer: This should be done right now, when the plants are in heavy, lush growth.
Landscape Lighting Kits Offer Value at a Price

The pleasure of a beautifully landscaped garden can’t be overstated. Extending the relaxation and enjoyment into the night, though, requires the installation of landscape lighting. In the not so distant past, this was both a labor intensive and prohibitively expensive objective. Fortunately for those of us who don’t have Kennedy or Rockefeller in our names, low-cost, easy-to-install landscape lighting kits have come to the rescue. But before you begin shopping for them online, take the time to know what their limitations are. After all, there’s no such thing as a free lunch and you’re sure to be disappointed if you don’t educate yourself first.
Low cost landscape lighting kits such as those manufactured by companies like Malibu Lighting are, in principle, a great idea. Their plastic construction offers several advantages over designer, metal counterparts. But along with those advantages come a few disadvantages you may not be aware of, and that’s what could lead to a big letdown. We’ll go over the good, the bad and the ugly but, as you read this article, I ask you one favor; don’t make up your mind until you’ve reached the end.
Let’s get the ugly out of the way first. Plain and simple, compared to some of the amazing designer alternatives available, these lights ain’t pretty. Now, ugly may be a bit excessive, but inexpensive landscape lighting kits are generally going to be made of plastic and their designs will be fairly uninspired. Not hideous, mind you, just not as sharp as you could get if you wanted to fork over considerably more money.
Truly inexpensive landscape lighting kits will be made of plastic and will have what can best be described as a dime-a-dozen look. There won’t be any variety in your kit. All the lights will look the same excepting cases in which you buy a kit containing path and spot lights. In that case, all the path lights will look the same and all the spotlights will look the same. Of course, remember that you’re trying to save money here so variety and unique features are two of the sacrifices you’ll have to make.
As for the bad, well you shouldn’t expect a great deal of illumination out of your inexpensive plastic landscape lighting kit. The very material they’re made of is the limiting factor here. Plastic has a much lower melting point than metal so that limits the wattage of the bulbs that can be used. If your hope is to bathe acres of landscape in a brilliant glow, you’re going to have to bite the bullet and shell out more coin for more expensive metal lights.
So with the ugly and the bad out of the way, let’s talk about why you should consider landscape lighting kits and discuss the positives. The first positive which we’ve already touched on is price but let’s put that into perspective. Malibu Lighting offers a plastic landscape lighting kit containing power cable, power pack, 6 spot lights and 14 tier lights (for paths and borders) for around $60. They also offer a nice looking metal kit containing power pack, cable 4 tiers and 2 spot lights for $117.02. That equates to less than half the lights for almost twice the price and even that metal kit is pretty low-cost compared to other sets I’ve seen out there.
What may not be so obvious in terms of savings is what you’ll save should one of your lights be damaged by a clumsy guest or an overzealous landscaper with poor lawnmower control. A damaged plastic light will cost you very little to replace. A damaged metal light, crushed by a stray lawnmower or weed-whacker will cost you substantially more. I’ve trashed one of my own lights and can assure you, this is a very valid consideration.
It’s also important to note that plastic construction isn’t really all that bad. At night, when your lights are doing there job, they’ll be virtually indistinguishable in appearance from metal lights. The plastic is also surprisingly durable, withstanding weathering and wear and tear quite well. Finally, an advantage over metal lights, your plastic lights won’t get dings and dents. That might not sound like a big deal, but my own metal lights started showing dents and it took me a while to realize that rocks and debris thrown from my lawn mower were the cause.
Having read this far I hope you’ve come to appreciate that there are some definite up sides to plastic landscape lighting kits including initial cost, replacement cost and durability. Saving money is the big selling point. Just know that you will be limited to using them to define paths and borders or spot lighting smaller features. If you have grander ambitions involving uplighting trees and statuary, you be better served by more expensive, higher-wattage metal lights.

Whatever the style of your garden, you should be able to find plenty of things that you like. There is so much available on today’s market that it’ll be tough for you to decide what you like best!
If you’re struggling to choose items that you like and you simply don’t know what to do then read on and learn how to choose the items that are perfect for your home. It’s a simple case of deciding on certain aspects and fitting it all together.
The first thing you should think about is what sort of space you have available. There are a lot of options available but sometimes you’ll need to think about measuring areas to ensure that there is enough space for the things you like.
You will then need to do some research to find the items that you like. The style you decide on may be different to what you’re used to but you should be able to see a range of options on the internet. Searching online can really help the decision making process.
There are lots of styles available on today’s market – you just have to know where to look. Have a browse on a few websites and see what you can find. If you perform some searches in Google you’ll more than likely be confronted with several offers and deals.

How to Improve Your Home for Very Little Money

The workplace is where one develops migraine, tension headache and stress. That is why it is not unusual to hear people scurrying to the Bundy clock as soon as the bell rings because they simply want to escape from it all. At the end of the long and stressful day, all they want is to lie back and lift their legs for a relaxation period in their house. Too bad if the house that one is looking forward to arrive in is in a state of disarray. The sight of a messy living room coupled with the stench of unwashed laundry is not at all pleasing. In fact, it makes one eager to spend the night in a nameless hotel just to escape the additional household chore.
Yes, not every individual has the cash to employ maids or helpers to follow up the household mess. Still, there are ways to make the home environment more pleasing without spending a huge number of bills. A few renovations or remodeling job here and there will actually do the trick. Be prepared to see significant improvements in a few weeks or so. Unleash your hidden talent and get creative. Be inspired by the example of Martha Stewart, celebrity home designer as she transforms a drab hovel into an astounding home worthy to be featured in a magazine. Stifle the urge to get help from an interior designer. They charge an exorbitant manner for a job that you can pretty much do yourself.
The succeeding paragraphs are tried and tested tips to give a touch of style to your home .Use them so that the dream home you aspire for will come into reality.
Bear in mind that the primary thing you should consider if you have home improvement tasks is to seek help from significant others. They may come in the form of your parents, siblings, relatives, co-workers and friends. They might assist you in the tasks that need to be accomplished such as plumbing, painting and installing electrical wires. Of course, they are not that knowledgeable but most of the time; they have the basic knowledge on how to carry out certain jobs. If you don’t have enough cash to give them a small amount in the favor they did for you, preparing a sumptuous dish might be enough. Or you can help them when they also want their homes fixed.
Second, buy products from second hand stores or flea markets. You may also consider surplus shops and bargain stores. With the current state of the economy today, it is not that embarrassing to be seen in places where you can save money. In fact, it has become the norm because people are now more money conscious than ever. Prepare to haggle so that you can get a bigger price reduction from the seller. There are a lot of choices that still look great if you know how to scrutinize the items in a meticulous manner. Use your keen eye in spotting the shabby and whimsy chic from the totally shabby ones.
Third, utilize all the colors of the rainbow to make your house look more interesting. The walls may be painted in vivid hues like yellow, pink, green and orange. If you prefer wallpapers, there are floral and animal prints to suit your fancy. Decorative pieces like throw pillows in various shades are also cute displays.
You may also bring in flowering plants that will not only be an additional visual feast but also help in creating a cleaner air because of the carbon it absorbs and the oxygen it gives off. Even a small cactus or bonsai plant will amplify the style facto right in the middle of your living room or the hallway.
So there you have it, the ways to improve your abode without wasting precious cash unnecessarily. Your bountiful reward will be harvested after a short time after everything is settled already.
Annuals Still On Option In July

Hot July weather always brings on that languid feeling in the South making us seek ways of doing chores without physical exertion. In fact, some of these dreams of gardening by remote control are a reality.
Walking sprinklers, rocking and rotary types, all make summer watering easy but the newest labor-saving stunt is a self-propelled rotary mower. The Lawnbott Spyder as one is called, travels around the open lawn and mows and chugs along by itself trying to dodge trees and shrubs by itself while cutting the grass.
Annual Flower Seeds can still be sown this month, especially fast-growing balsam, celosia, marigold, ageratum, petunia and zinnia for the Middle and Upper South. In the Lower South plant balsam, celosia, coleus, cosmos, gaillardia, geranium, marigold, moonflower, morning glory, periwinkle, portulaca, salvia, sunflower, tithonia and zinnia.
In Texas, naturalize bluebonnets directly into gravelly, alkaline soil in the garden or lawn areas. Sow as late as November, but July sowing gives longer blooming.
Perennial Flower Seeds can be planted in July and August. Early sowing makes strong, well-established plants for fall transplanting. Start seeds in a coldframe kept partially shaded and cool. For the Middle and Upper South plant pansy, foxglove, hollyhock, Canterbury bell, Shasta daisy, Oriental poppy, gaillardia, candytuft. In Lower South pre-chill delphinium, pansy, Shasta daisy and snapdragon seed in refrigerator for sowing late August and September.
Water Mums regularly during dry periods, and feed monthly with a complete plant food to keep them active. Failure to give good care now results in dead, dried foliage on the lower stems and poor blooms. Don’t forget the National Chrysanthemum Show in Bessemer, Alabama, in November!
Poinsettias grow too tall and leggy. Keep them pinched back until mid-August to produce lower, bushier plants.
Bulb Planting and Digging goes on through July, although most of the work is preparing them for storage and controlling insects and diseases. Tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, Dutch iris are showing yellowed leaves. Vesper iris also starting to bloom during this time. Caring for iris such as the vesper iris and other plants like tulips, daffodils and hyacinths is a priority this month. Leave them in the ground to grow into larger clumps or lift, separate and store in a cool, dry place until planting in September and October.
Dahlias are growing rapidly now and developing heavy stems. Tie weekly. Terminal bud clusters should be disbudded on large-flowering varieties. Leave only central bud to develop. Watch for stem borers. Wilting of stems and leaves is a sure indication. Find the hole where the borer entered and impale it with a wire run up the stem through the hole. Malathion and Orthene are good borer controls.

Fish Liquid Fertilizers: How are they Made?
Fish emulsion is a type of organic liquid fertilizer made from fish waste. While fish emulsion can be produced from many different types of fish (including wild caught salmon), a small fish called Menhaden is the most common source of this liquid fertilizer. An oily, bony fish with little edible meat, Menhaden comes from the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea.
The process of making liquid fertilizer starts with cooking the fish and pressing out the oils and liquids. The solids are made into fishmeal, animal feed, and other products. The oil, which is literally worth its weight in gold, is skimmed off. The liquid is boiled down until it thickens, making fish emulsion.
To prevent decay and gas fermentation, a minute quantity of phosphoric acid is mixed with the fish emulsion. However, this mixture is still considered organic since the preservative is below 1%.
Standard composition of organic fish emulsion fertilizers is about 5% Nitrogen, 2% Phosphorous, and 2% Potassium. It also contains micronutrients that are vital for promoting plant growth.
Adventurous gardeners make their own liquid fertilizer from fish. It’s a smelly, messy process, but it could be economical for gardeners with a ready supply of fish waste.
Many organic fertilizers are slow acting. Not fish emulsion. The nutrients in fish emulsion are released almost immediately. That’s why it is particularly good for seedlings and transplants–it gives them a jumpstart. Gardeners either water the diluted liquid fertilizer into the soil or spray their plants for a foliar feed.
Fish emulsion is a fairly mild liquid fertilizer, but it can burn if applied too strong, so it’s important to follow mixing directions. It has a definite fishy odor, but the odor goes away in a day or two after application. Some manufacturers add a deodorizer to their products. Fish emulsion must be used when it’s mixed; it can’t be stored after it is diluted. By the way, the undiluted liquid must be stored at room temperature because it degrades if it gets too hot.
Production of liquid fish emulsions fertilizers is environmentally sound from start to finish. Only fish parts that are unused or are considered as waste by fish and feed processing companies are used. Thus, the use of fish emulsions organic fertilizers thus decrease toxins in our food and helps make zero waste possible.

Its like of of those whole is greater than the sum of its parts type of situations.
Using a panini maker isn’t limited to heating up the panini sandwich itself, you can also grill the ingredients before you assemble the sandwich. How about making something with grilled onions? Toss them on the panini maker. Making sausage and pepper sandwiches? Both the sausage and the peppers can be cooked on a panini grill.
If you plan on purchasing a panini maker be sure to make sure it have the following features. Number one, dishwasher safe grilling plates. You don’t want to spend all of your time scrapping cheese or dried grease off of the panini grill. Just pop it in the dishwasher and forget about it. Number two, a large grilling surface. Even if you live alone there’s going to be times when you want to cook for a few people. A tiny panini maker is an embarrassment. Make sure it’s big enough to do the job even when company comes over.
